If you run along the spines of your cookbook library, no doubt a bunch of them have a little sailboat on them. That’s our Maestro Sponsor Quarto/Fair Winds! And they’ve got some pretty cool plans for Vida Vegan Con.
At Friday’s Vegan Bazaar
Wouldn’t you know it, a whole bunch of Fair Winds authors will be at VVC, so they’ll be taking turns signing their books at the Quarto table (where, yes, you can also purchase books). Scheduled to appear:
At the Conference Center
All through Saturday and Sunday at the AT&T conference center, they’ll be hosting The Book Nook just outside the main ballroom. Chill out between classes or when you need an extra break, charge your cell phone, check out their library, or chat with their acquisitions editor (she’ll be going to classes too but will be in the Nook sporadically).
And of course, you’ll find a little something from them in your SWAG Bag!
Join us in our enormous thanks to Quarto Publishing Group for showing their support for Vida Vegan Con and helping us make the conference special. They’re so excited to be a part of VVC, and we’re so excited to have them join us.
In preparation (as we do), Team VVC spent this past Saturday holed up at jess’ coworking space giving our 2015 agenda a grand overhaul. It’s always bound to happen, and we are so happy with the results! There are quite a bit of new additions — including panels, new names and suggested breakouts — with more surprises to come! Now, earlier that day, we started things off with big mugs of coffee while we caught up with a certain wildly talented New Yorker, the Queen of Vegan Desserts herself…Fran Costigan!
Join all three Vida Vegan Con co-founders for an intriguing chat with this ground-breaking veteran of the vegan culinary scene. Hear about what Fran’s been up to, her upcoming fabulous trips, and what’s in store for her “decadent” Vegan Bazaar demo and the by-popular-demand return of “Demo-ing the Demo“, during Saturday’s sessions.
To sum things up, we’re thrilled to have the “Queen” join us for a third Vida Vegan Con next month!
Vida Vegan Con Speaker Series: Fran Costigan, Queen of Vegan Desserts

Now that we’ve got the details out there, it’s time to pack. We’ve pricelined. We’ve unearthed our suitcases. We’re thinking about tacos. Our stomachs are seriously beginning to growl.
With that, we’d like to share a few things on our upcoming Austin to-do (er, to-eat) lists:
First up, a big must, The Vegan Nom taco truck in North Austin:
Janessa can’t wait to get her hands on their Del Rey taco! This vegan take on the classic fish taco has (gluten-free!) mock fish, cilantro crema, cabbage slaw and avocado. I’m estimating about four exclamation points’ worth of anticipation from the level of excitement she stated.
And dang, we can always get down with some of their breakfast tacos. Pure glory:
Fufu! You know, the “ancient african dish [that] is a thick paste usually made by boiling starchy root vegetables”.
It’s clearly fun to say and even more wonderful to eat, especially when it’s alongside a savoury feast from Wasota African Cuisine’s food truck:
For the record, this truck was gearing up to relocate when we last visited, so make sure verify the current address.
Booze wise, it was rather chilly while we were in town this past February, so I held out on a margarita in favor of sipping house-infused whiskey outside the firepit at Buzzmill with Michele, Smurfy & Joanna. Therefore, I would really appreciate a gorgeous margarita in my life next week (forecasts of thunderstorms, be darned).
The more you know…both Buzzmill and Golden Spike, where we’re holding Thursday night’s open VVC weekend Meet & Greet, have promised to offer both vegan food and drink specials during the ‘Con. Thanks, folks!
Wondering just what else is Team VVC excited about?
“Brass Ovaries. I haven’t been there but I’m so curious about it. Pole dancing!” – Michele
Another super new must, Rabbit Food Grocery!
We just dig Whole Foods’ downtown taco bar so much. There’s a taco computer, for crying out loud!
Did you know that Whole Foods is from Austin?! So you know it’s gonna be good.
For those dry, sunny days, I am stoked to get back on a bike around town. Grabbing one of these convenient rides from short-term rental provider B-Cycle was a big highlight of our last trip:
Did we mention breakfast tacos? We’re all downright obsessive about these shoestring potato breakfast babies from Cherrywood Coffeehouse:
While she’s not joining us until VVC itself, here’s what my wife has to say about who she wants to see in Austin: “All the dogs and kids I know from Instagram in Texas!” You heard it here, folks (and by that I mean, Smurfy and Milo).
And of course, we’re all stoked to see this lady:
And to balance things out, a smashing sale on organic kale at Central Market:
Rio Rita’s. So cute, I’m charmed, let’s go:
One more for the road, which was actually our very first stop in town back in February: Arlo’s!
Arlo’s vegan food truck is parked right outside Cheer Up Charlie’s on Red River street, where our Sunday night VVC + Scavenger Hunt After Party will be held. What we’re saying is this: VVC ATX = Vegan Vacation time.
More to come! We’re compiling our very favorite eats along with picks from the Red Hot Vegans, Lazy Smurf & everyone else we talk with, for a very special Vida Vegan Con Takes Austin Must Eats of citywide dining recommendations. Stay tuned!
For now, see you at TexasVegFest!!!

Bringing family? Friends? Living in Texas and can’t get enough of vegan events? Come on down!
Our debut Vegan Bazaar at The Marchesa Hall & Theatre is bringing together hundreds of vegan-loving folks*, vendors, samples, food trucks, cocktails, live demos, games, heaps of vegan food, surprises and a dose of the lively, contemporary panels you’ve come to expect from Vida Vegan Con. With that, there are two incredible panels currently scheduled for Friday’s Vegan Bazaar with just as fabulous moderators from our VVC family. Oh, yes. We’re talking our dear pals Joanna Vaught and Stephanie Bogdanich, aka the Lazy Smurf.
We caught up with these two rad ladies in Austin just last month to take in some firepit time, food truck eats and house-
infused whisky outside Buzzmill Coffee to talk all things Vida Vegan Con + Vegan Bazaar, their panel plans, the latest Austin must-eats, and most importantly, witness this mesmerizingly adorable hug:
About those Vegan Bazaar Panels…
Joanna Vaught’s Vegan Family + Parenting Panel
Joanna Vaught is a two-time Vida Vegan Con speaker, savvy mother, modern professional , pioneer blogger and author of the cult-favorite Yellow Rose Recipes, Yellow Rose Greatest Hits, and series of potluck-themed cookzines. This passionate panel will include her own experiences in all things vegan-influenced family life and live Q & A with scheduled panelists Brian Patton, aka “The Sexy Vegan“, Sayward Rebhal of Bonzai Aphrodite, Monique Koch of Brown Vegan and Bryant Terry and of course, audience participation.
Lazy Smurf presents: “How We Made Austin Awesome” aka The Austin Community Panel
It’s no secret that much of Vida Vegan Con’s love (and move to!) of Austin, TX is largely thanks to the one and only Vegan Lazy Smurf, aka Stephanie Bogdanich. Her blog, “The Lazy Smurf’s Guide“, offers a prolific, impressively updated and informed look at all things VEGAN and AUSTIN, in addition to travel reviews and thoughts on things besides breakfast tacos from time to time. Observing and eating our way through Austin in recent years (often with Smurfy herself), your friendly VVC organizers found holding our third conference here as irresistible as two taco-themed meals per day can be.
This panel will tackle the question, “How did they make Austin so awesome?” with real life inspiration and insight from these legit ATXVEGAN-All Stars: Jessica Morris of Rabbit Food Grocery, Kristen Davenport of Capital City Bakery, Molly Frisinger of Texas VegFest, and just perhaps, a surprise guest or two. Come pick their brains and get your city on the vegan map!
Thinking about taking a trip to Austin? Lazy Smurf’s Austin Guide is a must read!
Please note that things happen and all appearances are subject to change.
