Tequila Sunrise

Another classic cocktail for y’all. And by “classic,” I mean from the ’70s—the original ’30s tequila sunrise was apparently quite a different animal. So get into ’70s mode: halter dresses and rhinestones for the ladies, turtlenecks and sportcoats for the gents, and no disease that can’t be cured with a little penicillin.

Whatcha need?

½ cup orange juice
1½ ounces tequila
1 Tbsp grenadine

Mix the orange juice and tequila in a glass with some ice. Then pour the grenadine carefully down the side of the glass so it settles in the bottom.

It’s really just sweet pomegranate syrup—totally doable from scratch. If you search online for recipes, you’ll largely find the ones that tell you to boil down the juice and sugar, and the cold mix-sugar-into-juice kind. I went with one in the middle, from Jeffery Morgenthaler, with a little extra pizzazz thrown in. It smells amazing and tastes just as good.


1 cup pomegranate juice
1 cup evaporated cane juice
1 oz (1/8 cup) pomegranate molasses
½ tsp orange blossom water

You simply heat up the juice enough to dissolve the sugar, then add the other stuff. I added just a touch of food coloring to pretty it up a little, because it reads a little purple otherwise. Stores in the fridge. Also makes a mean Shirley Temple.
